UK insurance sector celebrates gender progress - gender progress insurance
Women now occupy senior roles in UK general insurance, including underwriting and claims handling.

A veteran of the insurance industry with 35 years of experience reflects on how workplace standards have transformed since the 1980s, when employment agreements explicitly prohibited women from wearing trousers. “It is extraordinary to think that this was once considered acceptable,” they observe, illustrating the sector’s progress in gender equality.

Now, women hold positions throughout UK general insurance, including senior roles in underwriting, broking, claims handling, and executive leadership. The Worshipful Company of Insurers has contributed by building professional networks and career development programs, while its female Master shows the industry’s evolving values. Beyond insurance, figures such as Dame Susan Langley, who served as lady mayor, demonstrate broader shifts in financial services.

The focus has moved from whether women belong in insurance to how we ensure they can thrive and progress. While many have achieved seniority through hard work, sustaining that progress and creating genuine opportunities at all career stages remains a challenge.

Flexible work arrangements and leadership initiatives are seen as essential for keeping women engaged and advancing them. Still, lingering biases and outdated practices continue to affect outcomes. Firms are advised to review recruitment, promotion, retention, and succession data to understand where women are progressing and where they may be leaving. Industry leaders stress the importance of sponsorship, where senior people actively open doors, create opportunities, and champion talented women, alongside mentoring and expanded networking.

The insurance sector’s collaborative culture should ensure opportunities are open to everyone. Confidence in progress is growing, but the priority is ensuring the next generation progresses through talent, ambition, and ability rather than gender. “We have moved from employment contracts dictating what women could wear to women leading organisations and professional institutions,” the veteran notes. “The next step is making sure those opportunities translate into progression.”

The Worshipful Company of Insurers has played an important role in encouraging women, creating networks and development opportunities. Having a female Master is a positive reflection of how far we have come.
