Most executives approach their job search the same way they tackled their first one: update the resume, apply, and wait. AJ Mizes, founder of The Human Reach, advocates for a different method built on strategy and data. He developed this systematic thinking during his years as a global HR leader at Meta.

The Problem With Traditional Metrics

Mizes identifies a fundamental flaw in how most executives look for work. They tend to optimize for activity rather than outcomes. Success is often measured by the number of applications submitted, interviews scheduled, or LinkedIn connections made. But these metrics rarely predict whether a candidate will land the right role.

Volume is not a substitute for strategy. Many leaders burn out applying to hundreds of listings without results. This approach creates a false sense of productivity. It keeps the executive busy, but it rarely leads to the best offers.

“The executives who find great 6-figure roles quickly aren’t the ones who apply to the most jobs,” Mizes said. He notes that the most successful professionals are strategic about which opportunities they chase. They know exactly what they want and have a clear plan to reach the right people.

Defining the Target Framework

The Human Reach methodology begins with the Target Company Framework. This is a systematic process for identifying specific companies and roles that fit an executive’s skills and goals. It moves away from a broad search and focuses on precision.

The framework involves three distinct steps. First, the executive must define criteria for the ideal next role. This goes beyond industry and function to include company stage, culture, leadership style, and growth trajectory. Second, the executive researches the market to find companies that meet those criteria.

Third, the list is prioritized based on fit, opportunity, and accessibility. This results in a focused target list of 20 to 30 companies. It stands in contrast to the hundreds of job postings most executives are sifting through.

While the general market relies on volume and speed, this methodology bets on precision. It acknowledges that at the executive level, supply exceeds demand for top roles, meaning visibility is less valuable than relevance. This shift changes the candidate from a commodity into a strategic partner.

Moving Beyond Applications

With a target list in place, the next step is building pathways into each company through referrals. Mizes is emphatic about this: at the six-figure level, referral-based candidates have a dramatically higher success rate than those who apply through standard portals.

The strategy requires mapping an existing network to find contacts inside target companies. It also involves identifying second-degree connections who can facilitate introductions. The outreach plan should lead with value and relationship building rather than an immediate request for a job.

Applications are often the last resort. The focus is on getting introduced through mutual connections. This bypasses the standard resume pile and puts the candidate directly in front of decision-makers.

Gathering Market Intelligence

A central element of The Human Reach methodology is market intelligence. This is the systematic gathering of information about the job market and specific roles before they are publicly posted. Most job listings represent roles that have been in the pipeline for weeks or months.

By the time a position is posted, the hiring manager often has a preferred candidate in mind. The executives who secure the best roles are the ones who are in conversation with hiring managers before the role is even listed. This requires a proactive outreach strategy.

Building relationships with hiring managers and decision-makers is essential. The goal is to connect because of genuine interest in the organization, not just because a specific opening exists. This approach puts the executive ahead of the market curve.

Mizes founded The Human Reach after serving as the global head of HR within Meta’s Reality Labs. He has since helped hundreds of executives land roles paying six figures and above by using these specific methods.
